Feria de Santa Lucía
Visit Barcelona in December? If you want to see something of Spanish culture, there's nowhere better than the Feria de Santa Lucía, a temporary market set up in front of and around the cathedral, selling Christmas trees and figures for the belén, the crib, as well as countless ideas for Christmas presents.
The cagatió is a log, with a face painted on it, wearing a barretina, the red hat of traditional peasant costume. On Christmas Day, it's hidden under a blanket and the kids beat it with a stick, whilst singing the songs of the ‘Christmas log’ or ‘Tió de Nadal’. The tradition has some similarity to the hanging out of Christmas stockings in anticipation of gifts.
There are many more traditions in Spain. One of them is the mistletoe (muérdago) and a ponsetia in the house - but they have to be given to you as a present.
Furthermore you have the making of the crib - something which they are busy doing and displaying in schools at this time of year. And in homes, the kids like to have a big one so that they can move the kings slowly closer and closer to the Baby Jesus, to arrive on January 6th - bringing the presents; as in Spain it's traditionally the kings (the Reyes Magos), not Father Christmas (or Papa Noel), that bring them.
The Feria de Santa Lucía will take place from the 1st of December till Christmas Eve and can be found outside the Cathedral, in Plaça de la Seu and Plaça Nova. (nearest Metro: Jaume I).

After at 3 year break since 2006, the 6th and last race of Red Bull Air Race 2009

Once again the Barcelona Red Bull Air Race takes place over the beaches of Bogatell, Nova Icària y Mar Bella in Barcelona in October 2009. This time it will be a 2 day event and will it is one of the highlights of the Festa al Cel - Barcelona Air Show 2009 in Barcelona, which also features a spectacular airshow!

Barcelona = Madonnaaaaaaahhh!
Yep! Last night the Queen of Pop 'did' Barcelona! A great performance was the result of months of preparation of the diva before touching Barcelona soil.
The public went crazy when Maddy entered the stage with a slamming classic "Ready to go-ooo".. Of course no opportunities were left aside to dedicate some songs to Michael Jackson.
A genius duo with Paul Oakenfeld converted the classic songs into rocking new songs. Unbelievable what imagination this artist has in order to understand what the public wants.
Flexible as chewing gum and dancing like crazy Madonna went literally jumping over the stage for two hours in a row. A geography leaded by Madonna's favorite dancer from france, Jamal.
Yes, Madonna is still the Queen of Pop for the approximately 50.000 spectators that came to the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium in Montjuich.

Tour de France in Barcelona...
Yep, yesterday for the first time in 40 years the Tour de France stopped by at Barcelona! Le Tour was expected to arrive in Barcelona on Thursday to leave again on Friday. Famous cyclists like Lance Armstrong, Alberto Contador and company entered quite dramatically into the city with crashes in the 'peloton' and all...
Then, on Friday, with some hurdes of people waiting for the big tour to leave the city, it was decided to leave Barcelona a quarter of an hour before the scheduled time. No notice of this was given to anyone.
Consequence of this was that thousends of Spanish, that normally tend to arrive shortly before an event, were left with some leaflets and trash that the Tour left behind and without having seen anything. A big applause goes to the organization that turned the city for two days into an inaccessable jungle for cars and other traffic and for what? Not even getting a glimpse of the runners...
A comforting thought however is that in 40 years probably they will pass by again..

FC Barcelona still not a Champion!
FC Barcelona wasn�t able to get the title this week. Villareal was able to push back. After the first half it was 3 � 1 in favor of Barcelona. The goals came from Seydou Ketia, Samuel Eto�o and Danile Alves. After the break Villareal got a penalty and Matias Fernadez took the shot and got Villareal to a 3-2 score. In the last minute of the game Llorente kicked in another goal for Villareal.
FC Barcelona still needs to wait to claim there title as champions of Spain. The next opportunity to earn it will be against RCD Mallorca on Sunday the 17th

Brawn wins the F1 of Barcelona!
Brawn keeps dominating the F1 and won again at the circuit of Barcelona. Button got 4 out of 5 of the races now. His teammate Barrichello is still waiting for his first Brawn victory.
Besides the fact that Barrichello is still waiting for his first victory was he able to set the tone this race. He went from position three to position one at the start of the race but since he needed to make three stops instead of the original two he lost the lead to his teammate. Button only needed to stop two times and because of this he was able to win the Grand Prix.

Lovely weather
Since a day of 5 we are able to compare Spain with the famous rain country England or even Holland.
From Saturday the 28th of March until now we had to deal with rain also the temperature is terrible at the moment, the people of Barcelona even consider it cold.
If you walk outside in Barcelona you will see a lot of people with umbrella’s and thick coats cause here in Barcelona they are not used to this sort of weather. I’m originally from Holland were rain is like the normal weather and I personally loved to see how people move here through the rain.
I hope my little story don’t prevent you from coming to the beautiful city Barcelona! I promise you the weather can only get better now!

FC Barcelona Football must see
Sunday the 22nd of March FC Barcelona played against Malaga. In the beginning of the match Barcelona already showed that they were the better team. In the first half FC Barcelona already scored 5 goals!! What a team this Barca has!
In the second half Barça scored again. The fans of FC Barcelona have seen some amazing goals. The final score was 6-0.
The entousiastic spanish crowd and especially the local media start again comparing this team with the worldfamous 'Dreamteam' of the early 90's.

Calçots eating tradition...
Winter in Barcelona is always lots of fun. Standing a cold that enters through your clothes and all 'northern part of the world' citizins complaining about it ;-), the nice thing Barcelona has is it's traditions, especially the gastronomic ones...
This year again the famous 'calçots' are eaten by many during the typical sunday afternoon family lunches. Calçots are the political family of the onion. Unlike the onion's fat and wide shape, the calçot is long, thin and mostly green. It has a sweet taste and is prepared on coal. The calçots are eaten with the hands and with romesco sauce. You can eat calçots during one of the many calçotadas organized by the locals and by local restaurants. Normally you will have to move to the outskirts of the city of Barcelona.
It is well worth it though! For excursions, ask your Barcelona Specialist

Bye-bye Bread and Butter...
Passed week the famous Urban fashion trade fair Bread and Butter was held in Barcelona. Some time before the fair started it was rumoured already but now it is official: Bread and Butter is leaving Barcelona... This has been the last edition in the capital of Catalonia.
No more traffic jams, packed streetwear shops, filled clubs and lounge bars, and of course the events' parties. The Bread and Butter was planned to be held once in Barcelona, now after 8 editions the organization has decided it is time to move on after a serie of very successfull fairs.
Bye-bye BBB, we'll miss you..

Feliz año nuevo!!!
Also Barcelona received the New Year with open arms! Unlike other countries, in Barcelona the turn of the year is celebrated eating grapes instead of firing loud fireworks.
The spanish have the tradition of eating 12 grapes for the luck it brings for all the months of the new year. One grape,one month of luck. Funny it is to see foreigeners trying to adapt to the tradition. This,also this year, can give hilarious pictures of people almost choking in these small fruitballs...

New Attraction Tibidabo
Barcelona has a new attraction! On top of the mountain Tibidabo, you will find a great amusement park. Now you can enjoy a new rollercoaster in this park. The rollercoaster called Montana Rusa, is a Christmas present from the city council.
In occasion of the Christmas days the Montana Rusa will be open. The amusement park is well known for it´s beautiful views all over the city. I wonder if you can enjoy the views if you are in this new attraction.. Anyway, find a link below

Santa Llucia Christmas Market in Barcelona
Every year traditionally returning to Barcelona, the Santa Llucia Christmas Market in Barcelona (Fira de Santa Llúcia) is a great opportunity to get to know the Barcelonese and their culture. On this market you will find the vast majority of Christmastree selling stands and of course the necessary Christmas decoration is for sale there. The Santa Llucia market is located in the area of Ciutat Vella Barcelona, also known as Casc Antic (the old cityheart).
The Santa Llúcia market is open from November 29th through December 23th. In case you want to come and see this special way of celebrating, my suggestion is to contact the reservation desk of Enjoy Barcelona. They offer fairly priced quality apartments in Barcelona.
The "caganers"
Known in Spain, but unique for Catalonia, are the Caganers (shitters, it means literally. ;-). The catalan way of expressing that at the end everyone is only human. These little puppets are sold in the Sants Llúcia market and are shaped following the latest trends in politics and sports.
You should not be surprised to find an impersonalization of famous persons like Barack Obama here in a "compromised" pose.
The "caga tió"
The caga tió is a game orientated to children for christmas celebrations. It consists on a piece of wood with a hole where presents are hided from children and covered by a red and small blanket. Children will hit the piece of wood with a wooden stick, while singing the Tió song in order to get a present when the tió is warm.

Soccer Information FC Barcelona - Real Madrid
Coming December 14th the blaugranas (blue-reds) aka Futbol Club Barcelona or Barça will be facing their eternal rival Real Madrid. This year especially it will be a game with a lot in play.
Rumours are going around for weeks already whether Bernd Schuster (ref.: Real Madrid's manager) will make Christmas. All seems to point at his substitution when loosing this traditionally important match.
Some tips if you want to assist to the match.

- be carefull buying your tickets; best you contact some local agent. In front of the stadium there will be a lot of people selling tickets but in most cases they overcharge a lot and the spots in the stadium are not that good. Afterwards you won't have anyone to claim...
- be there on time as you DON'T want to miss the start (simply amazing)
- bring a Barça flag, shirt or other supporting item. The "cules" (Barça supporters) will appreciate this a lot.
